Weather

Sector-wide moves change the whole world at once. Seven kinds, their exact thresholds, what they do to the sky and the objects, and how night works.

The seven kinds, day and night. Swatches use the exact tint colors and alphas from the scene; at night the tint is halved over a navy sky.

How weather is decided

GET /api/weather fetches quotes for 26 weather tickers (the indexes, the big semis, gold and silver, oil, the space names, a few megacaps, the nuclear and solar names, and the crypto proxies), then walks a list of rules in priority order and stops at the first one that fires. The result is cached 60 seconds. The sandbox asks every five minutes.

PriorityKindRuleMovers shown
1semi-stormNVDA, TSM, AMD, MU and AVGO average -3% or worsethe five semis
2gold-rushGLD up 1.5% or morethe one ticker
3oil-surgeUSO up 3% or morethe one ticker
4rocket-dayRKLB, ASTS and LUNR average +4% or morethe three space names
5sunnySPY up 1% or morethe one ticker
6gloomSPY down 1.5% or worsethe one ticker
7clearnone of the aboveSPY, when it has a quote

Priority matters. A day where chips are down 4 percent and gold is up 2 is a storm, not a gold rush, because the storm rule comes first.

The ground layers lean toward grey in a storm (42 percent) and in gloom (22 percent), and toward navy at night (50 percent). Stars come out at night and the moon replaces the sun. The banner at the top of the sandbox shows the headline, the detail sentence and up to six movers with their day change.

Day and night

Night is decided by the viewer's local clock, not the market's: from 20:00 to 6:00 the sandbox draws the night sky, halves every weather tint, and plays the night tune regardless of the weather. The sun and moon doodle on the daily page flips a little earlier, at 19:00. For screenshots, the sandbox accepts ?hour=22 to force an hour.
